Updated: Aug 28, 2022

" It was a perfectly ordinary biro, ... pissing and shitting myself." p.g. 110-111

This extract from the beginning of chapter 4 focuses on the lifestyle of the prisoners and specifically develops upon on the prisoner’s daily experiences through the use of imagery. The Global Issue of this extract is violence as well as censorship. The man in this extract as well as throughout the chapter is being referred to as a “prisoner” with no indication of his name or a brief background description. This showcases the government's indifference towards his nationality. The audience meets the protagonist of this chapter, Jin-su, through the lens of him being a prisoner. The prisoner is symbolic of his experiences, he represents the imprisonment in the Gwangju Massacre, and the entrapment of individuals. This extract demonstrates the violent nature of the Massacre as well as the realities of the prisoners. This extract presents the audience the way the government treats individuals - "but having that pen jammed into the exact same place every day soon rubbed the flesh raw", "the only thing I was permitted to do now was to experience pain."
